Are you ready to take action and make 2018 the year you finally start a sustainable, profitable blog of your own?
When I first started BestofBudgets.com, I never imagined it would become a source of passive income month after month. You’ve heard this story over and over again, and why? Because it’s true. Blogging is absolutely the best way to create a steady stream of income on the side while at the same time enriching people’s lives with your personal stories, experiences, and skills.
In this blog post, I’ll hold your hands and lay out the exact steps you should take right now to set up your very own blog that reflects your passion and gives you the best chance of earning an income from it, in under 15 minutes flat. And I’ll show you how to do all this with just the pocket change you have laying around right now.
Are you excited? You should be!
STEP 1: PICK YOUR NICHE
The first and perhaps most important question is: “What should I blog about?”
To me, this is best answered by asking yourself the following 3 questions:
- What are my passions? What hobby or activity are you passionate about or would like to get into?
- What are my Experiences? Do you have any interesting past experiences you think others would benefit from, or are interested in hearing about?
- What are my skills? What are your existing skills, or new skills you’d like to acquire?
The ideal blog niche for you is where the 3 areas above intersect, or P-E-S.
Here are some very specific niche ideas:
- Kids Crafts
- The Wine Connoisseur
- Healthy Lunch Ideas for Kids
- All About Hospice Care
- Living the Organic Life
- Pregnancy Preparation and Tips
- Interior Decoration
- DIY House Repairs
- DIY House Renovation
- Life After Retirement
- Over 50 Health Tips
- The First five Years of a Child’s Life
- Potty training Your Pet
- Living Off the Grid
- Adoption Tips and Experiences
- Losing weight after Baby
- Baby Gear Reviews
- Green Living Tips
- Party ideas for Kids
- Relationship Advice for Modern Families
- Decorating Ideas for kids rooms
- Gardening in the City
- Parenting advice
- Happy Ever After Love advice
- How to Run a Marathon
- How to Play an Instrument
- Fashion for kids
- Fashion and beauty for moms
- Educational toys and Reviews
- Books for toddlers
- Frugal Family Travel Ideas
- Best Couples Businesses to Start
Notice how specific my niche ideas are. This is what you want readers to associate your blog with- something specific. Instead of just “Running” or “Health Tips”, make a name for yourself educating people on “How to Run a Marathon”, or “Over 50 Health Tips” instead.
I’m a big believer in “niching down” when you blog. Don’t try to be a jack of all trades. You maximize your chances of success by being very specific, especially in this day and age.
STEP 2: SIGN UP FOR YOUR DOMAIN AND HOSTING
Every blog needs a domain name and quality hosting. The one I use and recommend to all of my friends is Bluehost. Here are the top reasons:
- Probably the most affordable plan to start a blog in 2018
- It comes with a free domain name, which is critical to your blog’s branding and success.
- Awesome 24/7 technical support via live chat, email, or phone. I always use their live chat to get very fast help.
It took a few days for me to pick this blog’s name (Best of Budgets). I really love it and it captures everything the blog will be about.
Once you pick and buy your domain, next is building your blog (WordPress, of course).
BUILD YOUR BLOG
There are many platforms available for your blog.
Hands down, I recommend WordPress. If you take my recommendation and select WordPress, go to WordPress.org to download and head over to Bluehost to set up the hosting.
Pick your Bluehost package:
You can’t go wrong getting the Basic Plan. You’re starting a brand new blog. All your needs should be met with this entry level plan. You can always change it later. Check out the step-by-step guide below that will screenshot the sign up process start to finish.
EASY STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Register, pick your hosting plan, and pay. Easy.
Check it out:
Enter your account info (shown above) then, pick your hosting plan (below)…
Billing information is next (above) then…..WELCOME TO BLUEHOST!!! You’re set up with hosting, yay!
First, login then go to cPanel.
That’s all there is to it!
DESIGN YOUR BLOG
Awesome! You’re more than halfway done. By this point, you’ve picked your niche, domain name, and completed the build of your blog.
Next is design.
Pick a template or theme for your blog. WordPress has a theme store BUT I recommend you head to Studiopress or Bluchic to see their awesome themes.
Set up involves creating categories, pages, and adding plugins. Your pages will include: About Me, Contact Us, FAQ, Resources, Advertise, and the blog categories you think are appropriate.
WRITE YOUR FIRST POST
Now that your site is set up, its time to start writing. I recommend setting up an Editorial Calendar, which will help you to stay organized. Coschedule has a great calendar which you’ll love.
You can post as often as you’d like. I try to post 5-6 articles per week. I know bloggers who post 1 article weekly. It’s completely up to you.
When writing your post I’d recommend the following:
-Use white space, which means make sure to have adequate line breaks so your article is easier to read.
-Images, infographics, charts, and graphs are great inserts to help your post
-Proofread before and after you publish
-Use Grammarly to check spelling and grammar (they have a browser plugin too!)
-Aim for 1000-2000 word posts. This is a lot of writing. If you can’t do this regularly, try to write lengthier posts as often as you can
-Make sure to use tags and put your post in the appropriate category
Once your post is ready, you can go LIVE!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on creating a blog.
